How can we truly put the patient at the center of all we do in healthcare? It’s a question that HIMSS President and CEO Hal Wolf addressed at length during his opening plenary of the Minnesota Chapter Spring Conference on May 21. The theme of this year’s conference was Patient Centricity, and the audience of 250 attendees started the day with an important discussion from Wolf that began with the notion that all change must start from within, reflecting on HIMSS new vision and mission to realize the full health potential of every human, everywhere and reform the global health ecosystem by leveraging the power of information and technology.
Wolf went on to stress that patient-centered care must reflect our new environment, putting the patient at the center of all healthcare services and delivery, with an empowered voice and seat at the table. It’s not enough to simply invite them into one conversation about their own care. In today’s world of increased access to information coupled with an increasingly sophisticated consumer, the patient must be given the role of teacher and partner in helping to build the technology to best serve their needs. The hour-long presentation ended with a discussion on HIMSS key strategies for leading change, and the organization’s important contributions to advancing patient centricity and solving for other challenges facing the healthcare ecosystem.
