As part of a process to develop a comprehensive telehealth policy framework, including making telehealth waivers that were established in response to COVID-19 permanent, HIMSS and Personal Connected Health Alliance have submitted a statement for the record to the Senate HELP Committee on the hearing “Telehealth: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic.”
On June 17, the Senate HELP Committee held the hearing to examine how telehealth solutions are being deployed during COVID-19 public health emergency, including the successes and challenges. HELP also began investigating permanent regulatory changes to ensure telehealth solutions are available following the end of the Public Health Emergency.
HIMSS and PCHAlliance recommendations focused on three key areas:
- Realizing the Full Potential of Telehealth and Connected Care Technologies
- Supporting Telehealth and Connected Care Technology Beyond the COVID-19 PHE
- Preparing for a post-Public Health Emergency Transition to Limit Disruption and Ensure Continued Support for Evidence-Based Connected Care
This hearing is the first of many conversations around telehealth that will occur on Capitol Hill. HIMSS looks forward to engaging policymakers in a thoughtful conversation around telehealth in order to create a policy framework that is predictable, forward-looking and encourages innovative and novel approaches to care delivery, all while ensuring patient safety.
